3. 5 Minute Personality Test and/or "Lyrics of Life" activity
I will count one of these assignments as regular credit and one as extra credit, depending on which you class decided. I would STRONGLY advise that you do both for full credit so that you can go ahead and provide a grade cushion for yourself. It will get more difficult as we progress so you should always take me up on extra credit opportunities.
Extra Instructions/Reminders:
5 Minute Personality Test: Follow the directions carefully. After you have tallied all your points, read what it says about you on the subsequent pages.
"Lyrics of Life" activity: You must do at least three out of five rows on the "Lyrics of Life" in order to get the credit for that assignment. Make sure that you are explaining the personal connection instead of just interpreting the lyrics. For example, do not state that the song is about pain and overcoming obstacles. Instead explain what pain YOU have gone through or what obstacles YOU have overcome.

5. Book Pass
If you were absent, you will need to schedule time with me immediately after school or during 2nd lunch. Unfortunately, this may only be completed in my classroom. Please be very detailed and specific with your book pass entries.
(I did end up counting this as extra credit. I will do that from time to time and you will not know in advance so treat every assignment as equally important.)

8. Hashtag Notes #ReadingLog
Things to remember when working on
this assignment: - This is to be done IN class each day during Independent Reading rotation. There will be no homework for it. If you are absent or come to class so late that you miss the rotation, you are to write the date and explanation on the log. (Be honest, as I will double check with my attendance.) - The books are to be chosen from the classroom independent reading library of lexiled books. It CANNOT be the same book that you are reading for your Outside Reading Project. The first book (only) is free choice, within reason (if I later find out you have an 800 lexile and you read a book that was 200 or 1300, it will be a problem as you knew full well when you picked up that book that it was way to easy or way too hard for you). - Please make sure that you fill out ALL information on the log (with the exception of "my lexile" and "my reading range" for now - until I can have data chats with each of you over the next week. - I will provide one log per date range. If you run out of room, you may print off more copies at home and bring them with you or you can use notebook paper to create your own. Staple all papers within a date range together and in order, before you turn it in. - You should read the ENTIRE rotation, pausing to complete your three required hashtags with supporting text evidence. If you finish your log early, you are still to read. Make sure you make note of your page numbers. - I WILL take off points if it is obvious that you are not reading (sleeping, talking, doing other work, etc.), EVEN if you complete your log. Be on task to get credit.

Due Date: A day = Friday, 9/30/16; B day = Thursday, 9/29/16
Last Date Accepted: ONLY THOSE WITH OFFICIAL EXTENDED TIME (IEP/504 plan/ELL) GET UNTIL NEXT CLASS (2 DAYS). All others must turn their log(s) in on the day it's due (as it is solely class work). This should prompt you to focus during reading, in order to get the grade. *If you are absent on the due date (write the date with "absent") and turn it in the day that you return.

9. Chapter 1 Hashtag Notes - Part II (Highlights - supporting text evidence)
NOTE: This is a continuation of assignment #7.
Please follow these directions using a copy of the text book pages, below.
Now that you have found your hashtags (central idea), it is time to find your highlights (strong supporting text evidence). Since we can't highlight in the textbook, we will record these on paper and attach it to our highlights to turn it in as one final product. Look at each hashtag and find one to two quotes that strongly support or prove that your hashtag is correct. In other words, you have told me this hashtag is a central idea. My response is.... Really? I don't believe you. Prove it!
(Complete your highlights for each hashtag through page 10. You do NOT need to do pages 11-13.)
Teacher Model:
#1 - "...to be taken by cesarean section." "I came into this world with a full head of blond hair."
#2 - "When he held me close and cooed to me, he said I was not able to focus on his face."

11. Inference Pre-test ("A Thing as Lovely as a Tree")
This is a baseline to determine your starting skill level with inference so that I will know how much intervention to plan for you. It is extremely important that you take it seriously!
You will have to do this with me. You may do it during class (during your Independent Reading rotation) or you may come after school. Please schedule this with me in advance. You MUST take this test within the next few classes though or the data is no longer valid.

12. Inference (Dog) Comic [Visual Level Inference]
I have noticed that many in the class are struggling with inference so we are taking a strategy break away from the core text. We will start with the basics here (inference on a visual level with just pictures) and work our way up the ladder until we resume our skill with our core text. Please follow the directions, in order, on the worksheet.

13. Inference Practice Questions I [Sentence Level Inference]
Our next step up the ladder on our inference skill acquisition journey is to try making inferences within sentences. I would like you to do two steps:
1. Circle clues/hints that have to do with the inference (what the author is trying to tell you without saying it directly).
Example: #1. "wouldn't eat after" and "two-year old"
2. Write the inference. Remember, you want to tell me what the author is trying to tell us but didn't.
Example: #1. Two year olds don't have great manners, catch a lot of viruses, they are messy, and get into all sorts of
gross stuff (like their noses). If the person says he/she wouldn't eat after them, then there has got to be a reason, like
she/he has a cold and wiped his/her hand across his/her nose and onto the food.

14. Making Inferences I (Paragraphs with Leveled Questions)
You continue to build our skills with inference by reading short paragraphs which force you to draw conclusions. You will then answer leveled questions (easy/low, medium, and hard -- this will help you see the progression of thinking for your Outside Reading Project, as well, which I know you are working hard on right now).
We will break this into two days. Day 1 = A, B; Day 2 = C, D. Remember, as always, if you do not finish your classwork in class, it immediately becomes homework.

15. "It Says..., I Say..., So..." Chart (p.14-17 of core text, "No End in Sight")
We are now going back to the text to test out the inference skills we have been building upon. We will use this chart as our cheat sheet to create the end product: paragraph (mini-essay) answering the essential question using ACES format (you will learn about this later). I tell you this now so that you can begin with the end in mind. Your writing will be SO much easier if you take this step seriously. The question that you need to keep in the back of your mind is, "What inferences can be made about Rachel's diagnosis and its effect on her family?" (You will examine mom, Rachel, and then dad with this in mind.)
Review the model for mom, making sure that you not only read the lesson (teacher think aloud) but also the work completed for you. You will do Rachel and then dad.
Start with the first column, then the second. Once you complete those fully for Rachel, complete the third column (basically 1 + 2 = 3). Remember that bare minimum (C) is 2-3 quotes. There is TONS of information for how the appointment, exam, and diagnosis are and will affect Rachel so really you should have 3 - 4 quotes for her. (2-3 quotes for dad is sufficient.)
Also, please make sure that you do not include information about the characters or story in your middle column as you do not know them and that column is about YOU background and life experiences in order to make a connection with the text.

16. Achieve Articles: #Notes Article Task and Activity Quiz Score
This is the same information copied from the email that I send you each week (specifically, every 3 classes):
***READ THE ENTIRE EMAIL DIRECTIONS!!!
1. RULES: - CHOOSE INTENSIVE READING from the drop down menu. (If you are under a different class you will get no credit because it will not pull on my reports.) - GO IN ORDER. (Remember, this is NOT busy work. This covers the standards that we are covering this quarter and is your practice. There is a reason to do the task BEFORE the quiz.) - SLOW DOWN / DO NOT RUSH! (Again, this is not busy work! I should never see you on the quiz the very first day. If you get less than 100% the first try, you went too fast. Make sure to go back in the text to find support BEFORE you choose an answer. You have three classes to complete this, after all.) 2. GRADING: You will have two grades: - TASK: Read the article under the Article tab. As you read, you will need to complete 3-5 hashtag notes focused on central idea. (HINT - doing at least 5 will help you understand the article better and therefore get a higher score on the quiz.) Do this by clicking on the circle arrow icon under the paragraphs and maximize the Summarize box. - QUIZ: Next click on the Activity tab to take the quiz. I ONLY COUNT YOUR FIRST ATTEMPT. You will get a second chance but that is NOT the one that will count for your grade so go back in the text and double check your answer BEFORE you click. Once you click an answer, you cannot go back. (As this is on YOUR reading level, if you get less than 100% you are going too fast!) WHAT IF I FINISH EARLY? Complete the same process with the Stretch Article and Activity (which is on grade level - great practice for FSA test and other classes). I will count this as extra credit - though you must get 75% or higher! AFTER THAT? You do not need to do anything else with this article. When you have finished, you have several options, you may: - go on to the next assigned Achieve article - complete an Achieve article for another class (English, Science, History, etc.) - have extra Independent Reading time (good choice if you are behind in your reading log) - complete make up work for THIS class Those are the ONLY options allowed and you must work the entire rotation. Come see me quietly with any questions. Click to view the article... |
Achieve Due Dates:***Do NOT do the Activity Quiz at home! However, you may read the article and do the hashtags at home, IF you are absent or behind.

17. Constructed Response, p.14-17 (with peer edit and revision)
This is parts 2 and 3 of the assignment (part 1 was assignment #15 above). You will staple all together and submit as a packet!!! We have been working our way up to this final product of answering the essential question! A few reminders:
- Use your text and your "It Says, I Say, So.." chart to help you.
- A paragraph is as many sentences as it takes to answer the question (so this is like a mini-essay, not 4 sentences).
- Read and understand the prompt (question) carefully before beginning.
- You MUST write in ACES writing format (see page two of the handout).
- If you are really, really struggling with how to start, you may use this sentence starter:
"The reader may infer that Rachel is _______ based on her diagnosis and her family is being affected in a _______ way."
- (10/4 & 10/5) If you did not finish your chart or essay during class, you may finish for homework. However, you must come with your essay ready for peer edits next class or you will miss out on that portion of the grade!
Peer Edits and revisions will occur next class! The due date listed below is for the final packet: chart, rough draft with edit, and revision.
